Contact Elected Officials
It is important to contact our elected officials to tell them how we feel about various issues. There is often a perception that they don't actually listen to us, but they do. The key to getting them to listen to you is to be concise and tell personal stories. Canned emails are usually not read, but counted as favoring or not favoring an issue. While email is the best way to contact our local School Board members, it is not the best way to contact other officials.
State and local officials are very busy and are constantly being contacted by a lot of people. A personal hand written letter is the best way to make your correspondence stand out from all the others. Another good way to contact your official is by calling. It is unlikely that you will actually speak to your representative, but you will get one of their aides who are influential on the official's thinking. If you really want to communicate directly with your representative, then make an appointment with their office and go in person. This can often be the most effective, but don't expect to get in to see them soon.
Good luck!
